The crucifixion before and after the Renaissance
Typical Medieval Crucifix, c. 1190.
Giotto, Crucifixion, c. 1310
The Crucifixion by Matthias Grunewald, c. 1512.
The Madonna by Cimabue and Giotto
Madonna by Cimabue 1285.
Madonna Enthroned by Giotto (Cimabue's Student), 1310.
Demonstrates the transition from the icon art of the middle ages to the art of the Renaissance. The latter is far more solid and earthly compared to the otherworldly and flat Italio-Byzantine iconic style that was copied by the guilds of artists in the Medieval period.
